(Hint: it’s not 3D, but it’s not flat either)
At DataGraphic, we are constantly being challenged by our uber-creative clients to produce dramatic and inspiring print pieces using nothing but the tools of our trade: ink and paper; heat and pressure. Of course that’s an over-simplification, but the art and craft of printing come in how we use these and in which combination of processes to achieve drama and excitement. Enter 2D+.
2D+ is simply a term we sometimes throw around to describe printed pieces that have depth. These projects usually combine one or more traditional printing and finishing processes like embossing/debossing, letterpress, engraving, die cutting, and mounting – to name a handful. All of the 2D+ examples you see here were created using these processes as well as a healthy dose of printer’s magic and intuition.
Die cut windows, mounting and edge painting/gilding can transform otherwise “flat” 2D printing into intriguing and tactile pieces that are a joy to hold as well as view. With 2D+ there’s depth and dimensionality that create both light and shadow. And that’s precisely where drama and excitement live.
We’d love to answer your “how’d they do that?” questions about the 2D+ examples shown here.
