Innovative Impressions: Using Stipple Foil Stamping to Add Pinpoint Starlight to our Sketchbook
In the realm of high-end print, there is a distinct difference between a finished product that merely carries information and one that invites an experience. At DATAGRAPHIC, we have spent nearly a century mastering the latter. Each project that hits our presses is an opportunity to showcase our commitment to innovation and the limitless possibilities of print.
Our little black sketchbook, which was featured as a PaperSpecs Must Have, consists of both blank and grid-lined pages and is interspersed with informative pages containing style guides, conversion charts and other handy printing specs. The cover of the sketchbook is emblazoned with an illustration of our very own Original Heidelberg KSB Cylinder Press created using a rare and striking effect known as stipple foil stamping.
For those who appreciate the visceral connection between hand and paper, this beautiful sketchbook serves as a masterclass in how traditional techniques can be reimagined through innovative thinking and modern engineering.

Redefining the Metallic Finish with Stipple Foil Stamping
While we are able to achieve very fine lines with traditional foil stamping, it is mainly prized for its smooth, mirror-like luster. Always pushing the boundaries of what a printing technique was originally designed for, we created a unique stippled die to embellish the striking two-tone pointillism effect on this sketchbook’s cover. As the name implies, stipple foil stamping utilizes tiny engraved dots to create a variegated surface, introducing texture, depth, and a sophisticated play of light.
To set up our shiny cover star, we chose the appropriately named Neenah Epic Black Smooth Cover in a hefty 130 lb. weight that provided a deep, void-like black. We then applied a two-color stipple stamp using highly reflective Luxor Gold and Luxor Silver foils. The result is an ethereal, shimmering effect that mimics the organic beauty of a star-strewn sky or handcrafted metalwork. Because the light hits each “stipple” at a slightly different angle, the cover appears to shift and glow as it is held, creating a level of engagement that a flat print simply cannot match.

Stipple Foil Stamping: Where Technical Precision Meets Artisanal Finishing
A great sketchbook needs to feel as good in the hand as it looks on the desk. To this end, we relied on our meticulous eye for detail to make the structural choices for this project:
- We curated a multi-sensory experience for the pages within by combining 80 lb. Neenah Classic Crest Antique Gray Smooth Text—perfect for writing or sketching on the blank and 1/4-inch grid layouts—with striking reference charts pages in 80 lb. Neenah Epic Black.
- To soften the lines of the substantial journal size, we utilized our in-house die-cutting capabilities to create precise .25” rounded corners.
- Rather than standard staples, we opted for Saddle Sewing using black thread. This “old-world” finishing technique provides a lay-flat capability and a durability that honors the artisanal nature of the sketchbook.

The DATAGRAPHIC Advantage: A Century of Innovation, All Under One Roof
Why do brands looking for luxury packaging and unique seeding kits turn to DATAGRAPHIC? It is because we offer over 10 different printing and finishing capabilities all within our Long Island facility.
Our almost 100-year history is defined by a restless desire to experiment. We love combining disparate techniques—like pairing the industrial precision of offset lithography with the tactile elegance of saddle sewing—to create effects that are uncommon in the marketplace. Having these services under one roof allows our craftsmen to collaborate in real-time, ensuring that the stipple foil stamping on the cover aligns perfectly with the interior grids and the final trim.
When you work with a reliable printer who manages the entire lifecycle of a project, the result is an unmatched attention to detail. We don’t just source paper; we source the right paper to ensure the foil “bites” perfectly and the thread holds securely for years to come.
