Incorporating elements of high-chisel embossing, peek-a-boo die cuts and white screen printing, it’s the string tie envelope that amps up the anticipation.
In premium marketing, the goal is not just to deliver a message, but to create a sensation that demands to be experienced. When a recipient holds a piece of mail featuring button and string closures, the act of unwinding the thread creates a moment of deliberate, physical engagement. At DATAGRAPHIC, we specialize in engineering these high-touch interactions. A premier example of this tactile storytelling is the complex, multi-process direct mail suite we produced for the strategic creative agency, ModOp.
By blending structural design with elite print finishes, we turned a standard informational mailer into an exquisite brand statement.
A String Tie Envelope that Entices Engagement
For this ModOp project, the goal was to create a memorable, tactile mailer that stood out in a sea of digital noise. To achieve this, DATAGRAPHIC engineered a set of custom string tie envelopes to house the agency’s unique promotional materials.
String tie envelopes—often referred to as button and string closure envelopes—are the gold standard for high-end corporate communication and specialized influencer kits. Unlike a standard gummed envelope that is ripped open and discarded, a string tie closure invites the user to interact with the piece carefully. It implies that the contents inside are valuable, confidential, or exclusive.
For ModOp, we didn’t just source a standard envelope; we custom-converted them. We selected a heavy, premium black stock to serve as the structural canvas. The contrast between the deep black paper and the mechanical aesthetic of the rivet and string immediately signaled to recipients that they were holding something extraordinary.
Multi-Process Cards Crafted with Artistry
The exterior of a custom envelope is only half the story. What lies inside must match the prestige of the packaging. To complement the custom string tie envelopes, DATAGRAPHIC produced a series of multi-process cards and a custom-folded brochure.
To achieve a visually stunning contrast against the dark aesthetic, we utilized a combination of specialized in-house finishing techniques:
- High-Opacity White Ink: Printing crisp, bright white graphics onto dense black paper requires mastery over ink density. Our pressmen utilized specialized techniques to ensure the branding remained sharp and highly visible.
- Precision Foil Stamping: To add a touch of brilliant light and reflection, we applied metallic foil stamping to the insert cards.
- Custom Die-Cutting: The internal cards and the folding brochure were meticulously shaped using our in-house die-cutting equipment to ensure a perfect, flush fit inside the converted envelope.
By handling the offset printing and custom conversion under one roof, we maintained absolute control over the registration and fitting of every component.
DATAGRAPHIC’s Advantage? Having it All Under One Roof
What makes the ModOp suite a triumph is the seamless integration of multiple complex processes. At our Long Island facility, we house over 10 different printing and finishing capabilities under one roof.
For our clients, this “under one-roof” advantage is a game-changer. It means we can print, foil stamp, die-cut, and custom-convert string tie envelopes without the project ever leaving our facility. This eliminates the time-consuming and risky process of “shuffling” delicate materials between different trade printers and finishers.
We love to combine different print processes to achieve entirely new, proprietary effects—perhaps layering deep letterpress over heavy paper or combining tactile embossing with foil. Our unmatched attention to detail in sourcing the most appropriate materials and utilizing the best in-house processes ensures that every piece of print media we produce achieves the highest quality results for our clients.
