The organization was co-founded in 2003 by the iconic musician Alicia Keys and activist Leigh Blake after witnessing children and their families in Kenya needlessly succumbing to the AIDS epidemic. The striking cover design was conceived by the renowned British artist, Shantell Martin, whose unique and instantly recognizable stream-of-consciousness line drawings and graphic style are famous worldwide. Martin’s unique artwork and design elements were featured throughout the perfect bound book, providing a cohesive and powerful visual brand for the evening. To do justice to this high-art design, DATAGRAPHIC leveraged a combination of specialized printing techniques that showcase our expertise in gala program printing.
For the wrap-around covers, we sourced a luxurious Neenah Classic Crest Smooth Epic Black cover stock, which perfectly suited the artist’s dramatic, high-contrast style. The covers were meticulously screen printed, which allowed for two hits of white ink on the black outside cover, creating an opacity that simply cannot be achieved with standard digital processes. The inside was finished with screened black ink on the white interior. The entire volume was perfect bound, giving the gala program a substantial, book-like feel worthy of a prominent spot on an attendee’s bookshelf. The resulting Journal—along with the accompanying menu and recognition insert also produced by DATAGRAPHIC—was an exercise in multi-process mastery, perfectly translating Shantell Martin’s vision into a stunning printed gala program worthy of the finest coffee tables.
